The grilled cheese sandwich is a timeless combination of toasted bread and gooey, melted cheese. It may seem basic – especially when compared to other elaborate sandwiches we’ve made – but creating the ideal grilled cheese sandwich isn’t just about mashing the ingredients together.
Here’s how to make a perfect one. Start taking notes.
- 4 slices of white bread
- 3 tablespoons of butter (divided)
- 2 slices of cheddar cheese
Liberally spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Make sure you’ve brought the butter to room temperature so that it won’t tear the bread when you spread it.
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium to medium-low heat. This will ensure that the bread will toast at the same rate the cheese melts.
Place one slice of bread (with the buttered side down) onto the hot skillet and top it with a slice or two of cheddar cheese.
Place the top slice of bread on top of the cheese, buttered side up.
Grill the sandwich until the undersides are lightly browned, then flip it and continue grilling until the underside is also lightly browned and the cheese is melted.
Use a spatula to gently press down on the sandwich once while grilling.
Transfer the grilled sandwiches to a cutting board. Using a serrated knife, cut each sandwich in half.
Repeat the steps with the remaining 2 slices of bread, butter and slice of cheese. Serve them hot.
Tip: some like to make a grilled cheese sandwich using multi-grain bread and having a slice or two of tomatoes to give it a healthy twist.
