Gear Lust – The 2017 Audi A7 hatchback

The mid-sized 2017 Audi A7 luxury hatchback is terrific. Simply put, it’s beautiful and performs really well.

Up front, the A7 features Audi’s distinct LED headlights and single-frame grille. Its appearance from the front doors forward is a lot like the A6 sedan; the roof at the rear gives off a fastback shape that adds visual oomph and interior space.

Audi adapted the look from the A8 flagship sedan, with a business-class interior made of luxurious materials and a horizontal layout.

The A7 interior is quite roomy, although the exterior shape came with a few compromises. Particularly, the headroom for rear passengers is somewhat limited.

The comfortable, highly adjustable, and well-bolstered front seats have heating and ventilation, but the back seat isn’t as roomy as you may expect.

The driver seat provides multiple adjustment settings, but the steering wheel is slightly offset from center in the A7. Angled slightly toward the driver, the instrument panel gives a cockpit-like feeling, while retaining a spacious atmosphere.

Four average-sized adults can fit comfortably; five can fit in a pinch. Scallops in the headliner provide additional space for taller rear occupants. The rear seats are slightly recessed to improve leg room, but it’s still best for smaller passengers.

The A7’s cargo area offers a long but somewhat shallow space under the hood and behind the rear seats. The rear seats fold down for more room, but overall the area is better than your average sedan trunk.

Standard safety features include the usual airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, a rearview camera, Bluetooth hands-free functionality, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitors.
