Gear Lust: The 2018 Audi A5 Cabriolet

SHARE

German carmaker Audi’s A5 series of compact executive cars include the two-door coupé, “SportBack” (a luxury five-door hatchback model), and cabriolet, which is a fancy name for having a roof that may be lowered/removed.

The 2018 Audi A5 Cabriolet is set to arrive in the U.S. in spring 2017. Here’s what you should know about it:

The Audi A5 Cabriolet uses the Quattro four-wheel-drive system

For the uninitiated, Quattro is an all-wheel-drive sub-brand by Audi, which uses a dual-clutch gearbox. That means it doesn’t have the usual torque converter found in conventional epicyclic-geared automatic transmissions. As a result, Quattro systems shift more quickly and are more fuel efficient.

The car is lighter than its predecessors

Despite having somewhat larger dimensions than its A5 predecessors (e.g. overall car length is longer by 1.9 inches, the wheelbase is larger by 0.6 inches ), the 2018 model is actually 88 pounds lighter, thanks to the MLB platform that it uses.

The interior is mainly the same as earlier A5 models

For the most part, the 2018 Audi A5 Cabriolet uses the same interiors as its predecessors. This includes power-adjustable front seats with leather upholstery, tri-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio, a 4G LTE modem with Wi-Fi connectivity, and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, which is a configurable HD display that replaces traditional gauges.

The roof takes 15 seconds to lower

The Audi A5 Cabriolet’s fabric top can be lowered in 15 seconds and closed 18 seconds, as long as the vehicle is running at speeds up to 31.1 miles per hour. All variants come with an acoustic top, which minimises noise.

The U.S. and Europe versions are different

The U.S. version of the 2018 Audi A5 Cabriolet will arrive in Europe as a 2017 model.

If you want the more powerful version of what is essentially the same car, look up Audi’s S5 Cabriolet. Their main difference: the A5 uses a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 252 horsepower and a 7-speed automatic transmission.

The sportier S5, on the other hand, is powered by a massive 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine with 354 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
