The trailer for Sicario: Day of the Soldado (or Sicario 2) is finally here. The film has been in the works since 2015, which is the same year its predecessor released on theaters.
Sicario 2 focuses on Alejandro Gillick (played by Benicio del Toro) and Matt Graver (played by Josh Brolin). The two aim to start an all-out war between the Mexican drug cartels. But there’s a hitch:
Not quite a sequel
The film is a stand-alone spin-off, and not a direct follow-up or prequel.
That’s probably because actress Emily Blunt isn’t part of the project. Blunt played Kate Macer, the original’s central character. It’s unfortunate because 2015’s Sicario is a terrific film.
What we truly love about Sicario (and its imminent spin-off) is how it delivers its yarn. It’s a tense yet grounded action thriller; really refreshing in this age of superhero films.
So mark your calendars – Sicario 2 is coming to U.S. theaters on July 9.
