The mint julep cocktail is the traditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby. Churchill Downs, the race’s venue, serves over 120,000 mint juleps every year over the two-day event.
But like most mass-produced cocktails, these juleps probably aren’t that good. We’re not even sure if those $2,500 golden julep cups are worth it. Which is a shame because when done right, mint juleps are terrific. They taste like minty/sweet/woody bourbon.
Rather than going for the assembly line version, consider making your own. It’s absolutely worth it! Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of water
- 8 to 10 leaves of fresh mint
- Crushed ice
- 2 to 3 oz. of bourbon
- Mint sprigs, for garnish
