BOSE have a pretty solid reputation when it comes to audio design, after all, they’ve been at it since 1964. So in a market saturated by Beats by Dre (which we are sick to death of hearing about), we opted to review a headphone that could deliver good sound and comfort over looks and status.
We feel the true test of an around-ear headphone is the longevity you can keep it on your head before you think to yourself ‘my ears are sore, I need a break’. Well with these, we never heard that voice in our heads. These truly are the most comfortable headphone (besides the BOSE QuietComfort’s) we’ve tried.
BOSE has put a lot of time and thought into getting just the correct amount of pressure from the headband to apply to the ultra-soft memory leather foam pads. You feel only a slight pressure on your head from these, just enough to keep them on firmly even when jogging. To add to the comfort, they are incredibly light and weigh in at just 140g.
OK so they are comfortable but do they sound good? With BOSE you’d expect an above average sound quality at the least and we can tell you right now that these do deliver. Listening to Killing in the Name Of on max volume through the iPhone absolutely cranked. All levels held well and we even picked up licks of the guitar we couldn’t hear on an amp system. The sound isn’t overly bass driven nor tinny with empty mids, what you get is a rich, clear and pure sounding audio experience. Where do these begin to falter? In the finer details of treble and the deep deep bass response hip-hop lovers would expect. If you’re after super deep bass look elsewhere. BOSE aren’t chasing the bass crowd here.
The BOSE SoundTrue’s have a removable cable system and a standard 2.5mm gold plated jack. They come with a three-button remote which is designed for mobile use and features nicely designed raised buttons so you know where they are blind.
So what is the SoundTrue to be known for? Comfort. You’ll come to understand this as the hours roll on and you’ll soon forget you’re wearing around-ear headphones which means you can focus more on your music. These are light, easy to throw on and perfect for portability. And although they’re not up there with the QuietComfort’s in terms of sound quality, we can assure you that you’ll be thinking “wow, I haven’t heard that before?!” when you playback your favorite track. These are THE best middle-range headphone for the price just don’t tell Dre.
